The term “Doula” comes from the ancient Greeks who selected a special handmaiden to attend the lady of the house during childbirth. The modern day doula is a woman who is experienced in childbirth and provides continual physical, emotional, and medical advocacy support before during and after childbirth.
Although the concept is not new, the benefits of this one-on-one care is more
apparent today then ever. The presence of a doula results in a marked decrease
in birth interventions, including drugs, forceps births, and cesarean sections.
The consistent support of a doula can also shorten labor, and increase the
positive feelings and well-being of the laboring mother.
